10 Plagues, a Little Deeper The following is a thematic correspondence of the lO plagues to the 10 Sefirot, the 10 statements of creation, and the 10 Commandments. According to the Kabbala, everything associated with the number ten in the Torah is said to parallel the ten Sefirot. The Noam Elimelech and the Maharal both correspond the ten plagues to the ten statements of creation (Genesis l, 3, 6, 9, 11, 14, 20, 24, 26, and 29) while the Chidushei Harim suggests a connection between the plagues and the ten commandments. R. Yehuda Arieh Leib of Gur says that the ten plagues served as a preparation for the ten commandments. The ten statements of creation brought the world into being in a manner in which Godly energy is hidden. The ten plagues broke the veils of concealment and allowed for revelation of that Divine Power through the ten commandments. In other words, the universe needs to go through disturbance on the road to awakening its innate self-consciousness and conscious intelligence. In other words, the difficulties we bear in life can serve towards enlightening us in a deeper way than had we not experienced them. 1 BLOOD The waters of Egypt are turned to blood Ex. 7: 19-20 The LORD said to Moses, "Say to Aaron, 'Talce your staff and su·etch out your hand over the waters of Egypt-- over its rivers, its canals, and its ponds, and all its pools of water-- so that they may become blood; and there shall be blood throughout the whole land of Egypt, even in vessels of wood and in vessels of stone."' Moses and Aaron did just as the LORD commanded. In the sight of Pharaoh and of his officials he lifted up the staff and struck the water in the river, and all the water in the river was turned into blood. Commentary on Plague related with the Commandment, Creative Statement and Sefirah. 1) The first of anything corresponds to the first Sefira: Keter. Keter translates as Crown, and suggests the essential, primal quality of all existence. · In the vision of Keter, there is no division and everything is whole and complete, perfect as it is in the mind of God. The polarity of God vs. world is not apparent. All is one and nothing separate exists. When one hangs out in Keter consciousness, one develops a unified center, a sense of fullness and perfection. 2) This is the goal of the first Commandment: to accept God, to accept that there is a higher power, a force of transformation suggested in the verse, (EXODUS 20:2) / am the LORD thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. The acceptance and inculcation of the energy of Keter strengthens our center and brings us out from a world of limited horizons where dissociation, narrow life-goals and thus obsessiveness, can dominate. 3) Emerging from narrowness and constriction, we are born into freedom. This experience is that of the first Creative Statement 1 1 1 Please note that since "In the Beginning" is considered the first of the ten pronouncements of creation, we are thrown off by a day in our correspondence. Thus, the second pronouncement "Let there be light" takes place on the first day and corresponds to the second plague, and so on. of the Seven Days of Creation, namely, "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth." 4) Conversely, when we are out of touch of Keter, we have lost temporarily the container which keeps us together. As our unifying center is missing, valuable energy is dispersed, causing hemorrhaging of our vitality, and negative entry into oceanic states of hell. The sight of blood or the dream of seeing an ocean of blood is a nightmarish vision which produces panic and fear. It suggests that our central life-giving force is in the wrong place and life is being lost. Before each of the two World Wars, Jung reported a dream of seeing an sea of blood. 5) The absence of water produces thirst and is a great deprivation. Water suggests clarity and essence, the prima materia into which everything dissolves. 6) Through the fear and pain of this loss, the inner Pharaoh or our developing ego, which at times can be narcissistic, addictive, insecure, and out-of-control, is reminded of its relation to a larger and more complex reality, a deeper substructure than those driving its needs to control its own experience and that of anyone around. The hell of panic and emotional-physical thirst compel us to shift to a different reality. This experience functions as a hell and purgatory of fear and discomfort which tear us away from limited world views and inefficient attachments which have brought us to lose our center in the first place. (The difference between hell and purgatory is that in hell there is a sense of time distortion, of continuing forever with no exit, whereas purgatory is time limited, as all plagues are). 7) Through experiencing the plague of blood the soul-self is freed from the ego to act in accordance with its inner nature of which it has now been reminded: the interconnectedness of all things and the inter-flow between all things is reestablished. 2 FROGS Frogs arise in great multitude and even enter into the houses Ex. 8:2-8 If you refuse to let them go, I will plague your whole country with frogs. The river shall swarm with frogs; they shall come up into your palace, into your bedchamber and your bed, and into the houses of your officials and of your people, and into your ovens and your kneading bowls. And the LORD said to Moses, "Say to Aaron, 'Stretch out your hand with your staff over the rivers, the canals, and the pools, and make frogs come up on the land of Egypt."' Then Pharaoh called Moses and Aaron, and said, "Pray to the LORD to take away the frogs from me and my people." Commentary on Plague related with the Commandment, Creative Statement and Sefirah. 8) The "second" of anything corresponds to the second Sefirah, the quality of Khokhma translated as Wisdom and suggesting the ability to conceive out of the limitless potential of Keter, a single pattern. Khokhma is the power or ability to conceive many details in one glance or one experience and condense them into a single seed. It corresponds to the second Creative Statement, God said, "Let there be light. " Light travels far and fast and our vision which developed out of adaptation to a universe of light enables us to see far and fast, to perceive things beyond ourselves; this moves us towards our continuing evolution. 9) When this ability is hidden, our world seems to regress and the forward momentum is lost. Sometimes it is the rhythm of routine which causes us forget the deeper possibilities of existence and the ego finds security in games of protecting the status quo, the reality it knows, which it considers tantamount to its own survival. 10) The forces of transformation (represented here by Moses and Aaron backed by God) again and again beat against this hard place within the being. 11) Being overwhelmed by the sound, sight and smell of swamp creatures such as frogs can be deeply stirring to the prehistoric brain. 12) The conflict between the ego and the more positive subconscious dredges up the swamp level of the psyche- the primitive responses to conflict and survival, the slimy and cold-blooded contents of the survival instinct within the unconscious. These "flood" the organism with noise and penetrate by their volume and intensity the selective forgetfulness of routine that enabled the ego to continue on its limiting path, enslaving the soul and all positive transformational traits of positive change. 13) In our lives the overwhelming quality of the information explosion, traffic, and crowded schedules bombard us to a point similar to that of a plague of frogs. We have to rethink the quality of our lives which has resulted in the society we have created through our choices and the lifestyle we have carved out based on yesterday's priorities 14) This plague corresponds to the second Commandment to avoid worship of selected parts of Creation. Exodus 20:3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me. Edinger (The Bible and the Psyche) explains this commandment to mean that "Although your ego develops out of an initial state of idolatry where one archetypal aspect or power is exalted at the expense of the whole, do not stay in your early developmental stages forever. Being overrun with frogs is like a nightmare of regression, as if all the development one has struggled through has been lost, reverting to the earliest stages of growth. 3 LICE (OR MOSQUITOES) Lice or mosquitoes come in great numbers and make everyone uncomfortable while awake and asleep. Itching is everywhere. Ex. 8: 16 Then the LORD said to Moses, "Say to Aaron, 'Stretch out your staff and strike the dust of the earth, so that it may become gnats throughout the whole land of Egypt' ... Gnats came on humans and animals alike; all the dust of the earth turned into gnats throughout the whole land of Egypt. Commentary on Plague related with the Commandment, Creative Statement and Sefirah. 15) Every third item corresponds to the third Sefira, Bina translated as Understanding and suggesting the maternal ability to take a seed and reflect it back to itself so as to unfold the entire universe from a single point. This understanding is of the quality that leads one to "stand under" the foundation of all life. It is Bina that provides the ability to select and unfold the patterns within the seed to enable it to grow to realize its full potential. 16) This quality corresponds to the third Creative Statement , "And God said, "There shall be a sky in the middle of the waves (water) and it shall divide between water and water (wave and wave)." The ability to divide waves, to separate moving patterns is like the ability to divide the cell and recreate the universe in a blade of grass or a kernel of sand. Bina is not as concerned as Khokhma is in seeing the great patterns or to process many things and patterns together. Bina is able to process in a serial way, one thing after another, each thing perfect and whole unto itself, irrespective of its contribution to the whole. Khokhma is nicknamed sight which can hold many details together in one view. Bina is nicknamed 'hearing' which hears each word one at a time. 17) This Divine ability to divide is bounded by the third Commandment, (Exodus 20:7) "Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain." Edinger comments: "Do not act. speak or claim about yourself that you are in harmony with the Self, operating out of wholeness. This is a dangerous disregard for the reality of the shadow." 18) When the ability to focus is lost,, the plague of lice appears. Every little seed or grain of dust takes on power. The God that is in every little thing becomes more powerful than ourselves, provoking an irritable, restless state of agitation, with multiple bites and random itchings. 19) As we become aware of the invasive quality, we are driven us back to ourselves to search out the depths of the meaning of our experience and to ask ourselves how it is that we are being controlled by things with more trivial agendas than our own. 21) The positive side of this fragmentation into billions of pieces is that it can disassociate the structure we have built which no longer meets the needs of today. Then we can rebuild. 4 WILD ANIMALS A zoo of wild animals roam the city streets causing havoc, chaos, and fear. Ex. 8:21-4 For if you will not let my people go, I will send swarms of beasts on you, your officials, and your people, and into your houses; and the houses of the Egyptians shall be filled with swarms of beasts; so also the land where they live. The LORD did so, and great swarms of beasts came into the house of Pharaoh and into his officials' houses; in all of Egypt the land was ruined because of the beasts. Commentary on Plague related with the Commandment, Creative Statement and Sefirah energies of the six days) on the seventh day: 22) The fourth of anything corresponds to wherefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day, and the fourth Sefira: Hesed. Hesed translates as hallowed it." According to some Shabbat kindness and suggests the expanding quality of theorists, the blessing and hallowed quality of unlimited eruption beyond any boundaries, often symbolized as light or water which flow Shabbat is in direct proportion to how much good and justice was done in the preceding week. And so, with the fourth statement of taking specific time out in the week to rest from creation the earth burst through the waters that our secondary goals and acknowledge our primary concealed it: "God said, "The water (waves) under goals, releasing deeper parts of ourselves. This is the heaven shall be gathered to one place and dry done by living one day of the week as if in heaven. land (particles) shall be seen." God named the 26) Keeping the Shabbat as an island of dry land earth." Not keeping Shabbat, that is, opening 24) The release of the earth to jut above the oneself without clear boundaries may result in waters has a parallel in the Shabbat-six days unscrupulous primitive parts of ourselves relationship. Mitzvahs and other acts of justice struggling to control what it perceives to be a and holiness release Divine energies within objects vacuum of will, a vessel whose captain is absent or and relationships during the six days of work; it is obsessed with its own drives and not the safety of thought that these newly-freed-up forces flow back the ship. Into this vacuum enter the predators, to heaven on Shabbat. Thus. Shabbat is a higher unintegrated programs of the self hungry to order of release than the labor and Mitzvot of the increase themselves even at the expense of order. six days of the week. This relationship is seen in 27) The wild beasts symbolize Hesed in their the fourth commandment, largeness, as compared with the lice, and signify "Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six the shadow aspects or Hesed, the invasive quality days shalt thou labor, and do all thy work: But the of over-expansion, the parasitic quality or forms of seventh day is the Sabbath of the LORD thy God: lower order of intelligence taking over because in it thou shalt not do any work, For in six days one has not revealed one's true power, purpose the LORD made heaven and earth, these. and all and potential. that in them is. and rested (i.e., raised up the 5 DEATH OF LIVESTOCK Cattle are struck by disease, impoverishing the people. Ex. 9:1-6 Then the LORD said to Moses, "Go to Pharaoh, and say to him, 'Thus says the LORD, the God of the Hebrews: Let my people go, ... if you refuse to let them go and still hold them, .. the hand of the LORD will strike with a deadly pestilence your livestock in the field: the horses, the donkeys, the camels, the herds, and the flockS. . .. And on the next day the LORD did so; all the livestock of the Egyptians died, but of the livestock of the Israelites not one died. Commentary on Plague related with the Commandment, Creative Statement and Sefirah 28) The fifth of anything corresponds to the fifth Sefira: Gevura. Gevura translates as strength and suggests control setting limits and boundaries, the inverse of Hesed. Gevurah enables precision and the ability to generate order, discipline, power, and focus of attention. 29) Structure and containment is necessary for life. Perhaps because Gevurah entered the world on the fifth day, life became manifest in an orderly fashion of generations begetting generations. "God said, " the earth shall send forth vegetation. Seed bearing plants and fruit trees that produce their own kinds of fruits with seeds shall be on earth. It happened." 30) Keeping separate the boundaries between generations is the theme of the fifth commandment, (Exodus 20: 12) "Honor thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee." 31) Honoring people who are worthy and not honoring those who do societal evil is an ability resulting from the discrimination of Gevurah. Maslow taught that an authentically religious person must have the daring to criticize and desacralize pompous ritual which is devoid of authenticity, but must also be able to sacralize the truly worthy experience. Gevurah teaches us to sacralize some things more than others. 32) We also honor, respect and keep sacred the "parents within," archetypal images inside our psyche such as the wise old woman and the wise old man. These connect us to our major instinctual foundations, the roots of the tree of life on which we are but a twig. Without connection to a set of inner parents, we can lose our sense of guidance. 32) Without Gevurah things dissipate and life is threatened. Think of the turmoil and dis-order the people of the former Soviet Union are going through as an example of Gevurah lost. 33) A dissociation from one's own self can result from becoming disconnected from our deep sources of guidance. Conversely, this disconnection can turn us back to our true path. When the hardened, stubborn ego becomes isolated by having been disconnected and cut off from sources of depth nourishment it is enabled to die/surrender and can again yield to the larger good of the organism. 34) The death of large animals in the fifth plague suggests that a major foundation of society has been lost and signifies the devastating havoc created by the absence of sufficient Gevurah, the anarchy generated by generational enmeshment, and the loss of outer discrimination associated with being out of touch with a deep inner guidance. 6 BOILS An epidemic of skin eruptions blanket the population Ex. 9:8-10 Then the LORD said to Moses and Aaron, "Take handfuls of soot from the kiln, and let Moses throw it in the air in the sight of Pharaoh. It shall become fine dust all over the land of Egypt, and shall cause festering boils on humans and animals throughout the whole land of Egypt." So they took soot from the kiln, and stood before Pharaoh, and Moses threw it in the air, and it caused festering boils on humans and animals. Commentary on Plague related with the Commandment, Creative Statement and Sefirah 35) The sixth of anything corresponds to the divide between day and night. They shall serve as sixth Sefira: Tiferet. Tiferet translates as beauty omens and define festivals, days and years. They and suggests harmonious co-operation between shall be lights in the heavenly sky to shine upon oppositional forces. Tiferet brings the ability to the earth. It happened." These festivals balance balance, harmonize and merge themes together out and smooth the transition of living through into a seamless whole. varying seasons. 36) Tiferet manifests in our seasons as 38) The opposite of a smooth transition is the changes balancing each other. Winter turns into cut-off. When the transition between such Spring and so on. This delicate balancing results opposite trends as Winter and Spring is not from gravitational pulls exerted over large harmonized and evened out, an abrupt cut-off may distances from sun, moon, and stars. result. Usually, such cut-offs involve a great loss 37) In the sixth creation statement God said, of momentum and transformational opportunity. "There shall be lights in the heavenly sky (stars) to 39) The sixth Commandment warns against solving transitional conflicts by cut-offs: (Ex. 40) Edinger suggests a Jungian interpretation of this Commandment: "Do not repress yourselves overmuch, this is a self-killing. Do not deny the right of one of your psychic contents to exist in your consciousness." Instead, recognize, accept, learn to co-operate and harmonize with conflicting inner energies, learning from the seasonal changes and the messages of our festivals how to bring the balancing quality of Tiferet into conflictual life. 41) The urge to kill is an example of a festering complex requiring drainage, much as a boil does. When the life experience remains. unintegrated, events and the resistances they create pile up. Unresolved experience festers and creates toxic, dangerous, painful lesions which prevent one from being at peace. 42) One must let go of such repression and pay attention to one's experience so that compartmentalized parts of the self don't have the chance to build up toxicity. 42) The plague or Boils represent the shadow side of Tiferet where, instead of ongoing integration of toxic and conflicting qualities, we find a buildup, compartmentalization and festering. These lead towards drainages and cutoffs. Such toxic self-killing results from lack of attention paid to integrating one's activities around one's purpose in life. 7 HAIL A torrent of hail flattens and damages the belongings, buildings and property of Mitzrayim Ex. 9:22-25 The LORD said to Moses, "Stretch out your hand toward heaven so that hail may fall on the whole land of Egypt, on humans and animals and all the plants of the field in the land of Egypt." Then Moses stretched out his staff toward heaven, and the LORD sent thunder and hail, and fire came down on the earth. And the LORD rained hail on the land of Egypt; there was hail with fire flashing continually in the midst of it, such heavy hail as had never fallen in all the land of Egypt since it became a nation. The hail struck down everything that was in the open field throughout all the land of Egypt, both human and animal; the hail also struck down all the plants of the field, and shattered every tree in the field. Commentary on Plague related with the Commandment, Creative Statement and Sefirah 43) The seventh of anything corresponds to purity of a substance. "Do not mix and adulterate valuable material with something inferior. Try not the seventh Sefira: Netzakh. Netzakh translates as victory and suggests the ability to endure, to hang to violate your highest perceived values by paying in there. Its placement on the right (expansive) most of your attention to lesser values." This side of the Tree underneath H esed suggests its adulterates and lessens the purity of your focus. ability to expansively proliferate and reproduce 46) Hail represents the shadow aspect of Netzakh. Instead of moisture creating conditions itself. I think of Netzakh as having a slightly manic, over-optimistic, premature, can-do energy. for a world teeming with life, hard ice is 44) In the seventh Creative Statement Elohim proliferated becoming weapons of mass destruction. Instead of a victory of production we said, "The waters shall teem with swarms of living creatures. Flying creatures shall fly over the land, find a bombardment. Instead of sexual impulses on the face of the heavenly sky. This quality of directed towards the triumph of love we find them successful proliferation relates to Netzakh, directed towards subjugation for its own sake. The victoriously enduring where other species have warm, living impulses of life freeze when they are failed to thrive. hardened, congealed by the conquest motive, 45) The seventh Commandment is from providing a poor substitute for true love, creating Exodus "Thou shalt not commit conditions for confusion, and the drainingof one's adultery." Edinger offers a Jungian interenergy away from fixing the world. pretation: to adulterate is to dilute and lessen the 8 LOCUSTS Swarming locusts devour all vegetation creating conditions for famine, & cause an ugly nuisance. Ex. 10:3-15 "Thus says the LORD, the God of the Hebrews, 'How long will you refuse to humble yourself before me? Let my people go, so that they may worship me. For if you refuse to let my people go, tomorrow I will bring locusts into your country'. So Moses stretched out his staff over the land of Egypt, and the LORD brought an east wind upon the land all that day and all that night; when morning came, the east wind had brought the locusts. The locusts came upon all the land of Egypt and settled on the whole country of Egypt, such a dense swarm of locusts as had never been before, nor ever shall be again. They covered the surface of the whole land, so that the land was black; and they ate all the plants in the land and all the fruit of the trees that the hail had left; nothing green was left, no tree, no plant in the field, in all the land of Egypt. Commentary on Plague related with the Commandment, Creative Statement and Sefirah 43) The eighth of anything corresponds to and suggests the ability to bring out the best in the eighth Sefira: Hod. Hod translates as Glory something, the glory and glowing quality, its sophistication at its most refined. Situated beneath Gev u rah, on the tree, Hod partakes of its astringent, conservative nature. Instead of an inclination to proliferate prematurely as Netzakh, Hod exerts an influence to refine the complexity and sophistication of the action until it will produce a "Glory" not just a "Victory." 44) In the eighth Creative Statement Elohim said, "The earth shall bring forth particular species of living creatures, particular species of livestock, land animals, and beasts of the earth." It We see that the creatures created happened. under Hod's influence were more complex and intelligent than those created under that of Netzakh. 45) The eighth Commandment reads (Exodus 20:15) Thou shalt not steal. A Hassidic interpretation of this commandment mentions the doctrine of the sparks in which each person has a particular spark to find and raise towards holiness through conscious acts. By swiping an object neither they nor you will be able to uncover the holy spark latent in it thus deferring and postponing the time of the Moshiakh, the celebration of the uncovering of all sparks.. 46) A psychological update of this interpretation may be that each person must come to know what is their own "stuff" to transform and what belongs to another. By taking the load of another's responsibility both is enmeshed and each person in the relationship are prevented from coming to clarity. 47) A Jungian interpretation of this commandment might suggest, "Be not presumptuously identifying as the Self in which you act out your ego inflation, losing the distinctions between what belongs to you and what does not." 48) Locusts represent the shadow side of Hod. In place of holding-back to refine and to create more intelligent solutions, huge proliferation of independent contractors bring society down towards a more primitive reality. Distinctions between what is my stuff and what is yours are blurred, all natural boundaries are lost and one has to relate to the reality of parasites who destroy themselves by stealing from their host. 49) There is a positive side to this destruction: Invasion by insects is an image of being overrun by a multiplicity of elementary units, fragmenting the psyche so that it could be rebuilt on safer ground. 9DARKNESS All the lights go out, including sun, moon, stars and fires. The land is enveloped in a thick fog. All commerce and interaction stops, and fear pervades. Ex. 10:21-3 Then the LORD said to Moses, "Stretch out your hand toward heaven so that there may be darkness over the land of Egypt, a darkness that can be felt." So Moses stretched out his hand toward heaven, and there was dense darkness in all the land of Egypt for three days. People could not see one another, and for three days they could not move from where they were; but the Israelites had light where they lived. Commentary on Plague related with the Commandment, Creative Statement and Sefirah 50) The ninth of anything corresponds to the existence by projecting itonto others, saying, "I am Yesod translates as ninth Sefira: Yesod. good. Every community leader is gone. The eyes and decision-makers of Mitzrayim are gone. The government is decapitated. Ex. 12:29-30 At midnight the LORD struck down all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh who sat on his throne to the firstborn of the prisoner who was in the dungeon, and all the firstborn of the livestock. Pharaoh arose in the night, he and all his officials and all the Egyptians; and there was a loud cry in Egypt, for there was not a house without someone dead. Efraim of Sidelkov said: The Hebrew for the fifth and seventh plagues, barad and dever, (death of wild animals and hail) have the same letters with the numerical value adding up to 206. If you add one, representative of the word's general binding factor, you get 207, producing the numerical equivalent of or and roz, light and secret. The purpose of the plagues was to reveal Godly light and allow the mystic secrets of creation to be revealed.
